RV Insurance

An RV is a vehicle when it is moving and a residence when it is parked, and insurance treats those as two different situations. We cover both, and how often you use it decides which form fits.

What’s covered

What RV insurance covers

Liability

Bodily injury and property damage you cause while driving. A motorhome carries the same 50/100/50 minimum North Carolina requires of a car. A towable leans on the tow vehicle’s liability instead, which surprises a lot of owners.

Collision

Repairs to the rig after a collision, whoever caused it. Deductibles are often higher than on a car, and on a large motorhome the repair economics look more like a boat than an automobile.

Comprehensive

Theft, vandalism, hail, falling limbs, and storm damage while parked or stored. On this coast that includes wind damage to a rig sitting in a driveway through hurricane season.

Full-timer liability

Liability for people who live in the rig, covering injuries and damage while it is parked and in use as a residence. It works the way a homeowners policy does, and standard RV policies do not include it.

Vacation liability

Liability while the rig is parked and used as a temporary residence, for owners who travel in it rather than live in it. Narrower than full-timer coverage, and many policies include it already.

Total loss replacement

Settles a total loss at the purchase price or with a comparable new unit instead of at depreciated value, usually within a defined number of model years. Depreciation on a new rig makes this worth pricing.

Attached accessories

Awnings, satellite dishes, solar panels, and the equipment added after purchase. The base limit does not stretch to cover these, and on a well-equipped rig they add up faster than owners expect.

Emergency expense

Lodging, meals, and transport home when the rig becomes uninhabitable a long way from where you started. The coverage pays those costs up to the policy limit while repairs are underway, wherever you happen to be.

Who it’s for

Who needs RV insurance

01

Weekend travelers

The rig goes out a handful of times a year and sits in storage between trips.

02

Full-time RVers

No other residence, which changes how the liability side has to be built.

03

Towable and fifth wheel owners

Liability sits with the tow vehicle, so the trailer needs physical damage coverage of its own.

04

Owners storing on the coast

A rig parked on the coast through hurricane season carries real wind exposure.

Our process

How we quote an RV

1

Tell us about the rig

The make, the year, and roughly how many nights a year it gets used. Usage decides which form fits, and full-time use changes the answer completely.

2

We quote RV carriers

We quote carriers that write recreational vehicles, instead of bolting the rig onto an auto policy where the coverage does not reach.

3

We explain the terms

We settle the storage period, the total loss terms, and whether you need full-timer liability before you buy, so nothing turns up as a surprise later.

“Absolutely thrilled with the service Anna provided for both our car and homeowners insurance. She went above and beyond for us and our savings was remarkable!”

Common questions

Questions we hear from RV owners

Yes for a motorhome, which is a motor vehicle and needs its own liability. A towed trailer generally relies on the tow vehicle’s liability, though it still needs physical damage coverage of its own. Read more about auto insurance.

Full-timer coverage is liability that works like a homeowners policy for people whose RV is their residence. Without it, an injury to a guest at your site falls outside both your RV policy and any homeowners policy you no longer have.

Yes for motorhomes. Any vehicle with a North Carolina registration has to carry continuous liability insurance under G.S. 20-309, and since July 1, 2025 the minimum is 50/100/50 with matching uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. A towable trailer does not need liability of its own, because it runs under the tow vehicle’s policy, but it still needs physical damage coverage.

Total loss replacement settles a claim at purchase price or with a comparable new unit instead of at depreciated value, generally within a set number of model years. On a new rig the depreciation curve makes it worth having.

Yes. A storage or lay-up period reflects the months the rig is not in use, though comprehensive coverage should stay in force for wind and hail while it sits.

Only up to a point. Awnings, solar, satellite, and aftermarket equipment need their own limit, and belongings inside the rig are covered separately again. On a well-equipped rig both limits are commonly set lower than the gear is worth.
