Personal Umbrella Insurance

An umbrella starts paying once your auto or home policy has paid its own limit in full. It covers the part of a judgment those policies cannot reach, generally beginning at a million dollars.

What’s covered

What umbrella insurance adds

Extended liability

Additional liability above your auto, home, boat, and rental property limits, generally starting at a million dollars. It responds once the underlying policy has paid its own limit in full.

Legal defense

Attorney costs for covered claims, often paid outside the policy limit rather than drawn from it. Defending a claim that goes nowhere still costs real money.

Worldwide coverage

Protection that travels with you rather than sitting at your address. That matters for a household that drives, boats, rents, and travels, because the underlying policies are far more geographically limited.

Landlord liability

A layer above rental property liability, which is where most households carry exposure without knowing it. Tenants and short-term guests generate claims a private home never would.

Personal injury

Libel, slander, and defamation claims, which the base auto and home policies generally skip entirely. A review of a local contractor or a comment in a community group is enough to start one.

Underlying limit requirements

Carriers require your auto and home policies to carry minimum limits before an umbrella sits above them. North Carolina’s 50/100/50 auto minimum is below what most umbrella carriers ask for, so the auto policy often moves first.

Uninsured motorist extension

Extends your uninsured and underinsured motorist protection above the auto policy limit where a carrier allows it. Worth asking about, since North Carolina now requires UM and UIM at limits matching your liability and an umbrella can build from there.

Higher limits

Limits from one million upward, added in layers. We show the options side by side so you can see how each layer prices before you choose.

Who it’s for

Who needs umbrella insurance

01

Homeowners with equity

The more equity there is to reach, the further a judgment can go.

02

Households with teen drivers

A newly licensed driver adds exposure suddenly, and it stays for years.

03

Landlords and hosts

Tenants and guests raise liability well past what a private household generates.

04

Boat and RV owners

More vehicles and more water mean more ways to be liable.

Our process

How we quote an umbrella

1

Send your current declarations

Your current auto and home declarations pages tell us the underlying limits, which decide whether an umbrella can sit on top and what has to change first.

2

We check the underlying limits

We raise anything falling short of the carrier’s requirement first, then quote the umbrella above it so the layers connect without a gap.

3

We price the layers

You see what one million, two million, and more would each cost, so the decision comes down to a number.

“Absolutely thrilled with the service Anna provided for both our car and homeowners insurance. She went above and beyond for us and our savings was remarkable!”

Common questions

Questions we hear about umbrella coverage

Open with the working guideline, which is to carry at least as much umbrella as your net worth, then explain the variables that move it: home equity, rental property, teen drivers, boats, and how much liability the underlying policies already carry.

Underlying limit requirements are the minimum auto and home liability limits a carrier wants in place before it will write an umbrella above them. If yours fall short we raise them first, and we show you what that step costs before you commit.

Yes, if the rental is listed. Umbrella coverage can extend above landlord liability, but the property has to be scheduled on the policy rather than assumed, which is a common and expensive oversight.

Generally yes, and the boat policy has to carry qualifying liability limits underneath it. We check the marine limits at the same time, because an umbrella cannot sit above a gap.

Your own injuries, your own property, and anything connected to a business you run. Umbrella coverage is liability only, and business exposure needs a commercial policy instead of a personal layer.

Yes, and often outside the limit instead of inside it. That distinction matters, because legal costs on a claim that is eventually dismissed can still run high before it ends.
